Sorrento Peninsula : Marina Puolo  (page 1 of 2)
PuoloAfter the Capo di Sorrento (Cape Sorrento) it ends the territory of Sorrento municipality and it starts the one of Massa Lubrense, which occupies all the final part of Sorrento Peninsula, ending on south with Punta Campanella (Cape Campanella). The main characteristic of the wide territory of Massa Lubrense is that it is divided into an high number of hamlets, small independent centers of aggregation. The first among these fractions that we meet coming from Sorrento is the Marina di Puolo, in the cove having the same name.

The Capo di Sorrento is not a mere administrative border existing only on maps, but is a real discriminating element: the plan of Sorrento consists of high tufa sediments of volcanic origin, which have filled up the depression between the calcareous mountains, while the final par of the peninsula has kept its main limestone structure that arrives up to the sea, so that we find again in Massa Lubrense the beaches with stones and rocks.

Marina di Puolo is the seafaring village that occupies the small bay between Capo di Sorrento and Capo di Massa, with the houses built right on the beach. Born as village of fishermen, it is today an appreciated tourist resort, small but independent, equipped with lodgings, restaurants, bars and bathing establishments. The port of the bay still hosts some fishing boats, but the main economic activity is tourism.

Marina di Puolo can be reached through a branch to the provincial road leading from Sorrento to Massa Lubrense and goes down to the sea among the lemon and olive trees. Several parkings (some of them just on dirt patches under the trees) allow to leave the car or the scooter at few distance from the beach, while the last section of the road is crossable by car only by the dwellers. Once arrived on the shoreline, you can choose to swim immediately near the beach in front of the village or to continue towards the area of the harbour.  [ More...]
