The Spanish Steps
Piazza di Spagna (Spain's Square) is certainly the most famous square in Rome, overlooked by the imposing and renown stairway of Trinita dei Monti (the Spanish Steps) built in XVIII century to connect the square to the upper Church of Trinita dei Monti and to create a stately scenery, made famous by the movie "Holiday in Rome" and since then unavoidable attraction for each tourist in Rome. In spring these steps are covered with flowers, offering an unforgettable spectacle.

At the foot of the steps there is the famous Fountain of the Barcaccia (Dinghy). traditionally considered work by Pietro Bernini but recently attributed to his famous son Gian Lorenzo Bernini still young or common work by father and son.

From Piazza di Spagna start some of the most important streets in Rome: Via Condotti, where are the most elegant boutiques and most prestigious stylists; Via Margutta, once the district and meeting point for artists (especially painters) and for art galleries; Via del Babuino, which leads to Piazza del Popolo.

The square took its name from the historical presence here of the Embassy of Spain. From the church of Trinita dei Monti, built in XVI century and restructured in the XIX century, you may enjoy a beautiful panorama over the city. Inside the church there is an interesting Deposition by Daniele da Volterra, follower of Michelangelo.

Behind the church are the luxuriant gardens of Villa Medici, which nowadays hosts the Academy of France; the palace was built in 1570 by Ammannati, the architect of Medici's family from Florence.
