From Piazza dei Martiri (the Church's square) it starts the main descent to the Marina, Via San Rocco, which takes its name by a small church built there. It belongs to the 2nd half of the 16th century and was built in thankful fulfillment of a pledge to its patron for the town's being spared from the ravages of bubonic plague during one of the pestilences which devastated this area. The Church of San Rocco is characterized by a simple structure, which is the expression of building manner being sincerely popular. The only lightings are three eyes on the front, while all other sides are blind, since the church is submerged by surrounding houses. The transverse double bell-gable which draws close to the windows of adjacent houses.

Marina Corricella

Inside Corricella each house leans upon and against its neighbours, so that they all together form an inseparable unity where individual features fade away, while the common dimension of village life has been given prominence. The practice of leaning dwellings of the village against one another and of sharing passageways encouraged the development of a strong spirit of belonging in the community and stimulated further aggregation, giving a real unity to the social life of Corricella. For these reasons, an overall view of Corricella gives a compact, united appearance: it is an indivisible complex where each element takes strength and meaning from its context, so that it can stand out only to the extent of its relation to others.  [ More...]
