Serrara and Fontana are two separated villages, combined into a single administrative unit. The southern one is Serrara (actual seat of the Town Hall) and it is also the most recent: its first testimonies belong to the 18th century, when it was founded the parish church. The village of Fontana, at 400 meters over the sea level, has instead a Medieval origin and derives its name from the fountain of drinkable water around which they rose the farms. The parish church of Fontana is the church of Santa Maria La Sacra (Our Lady The Sacred) built the first time in the 14th century. Other hamlets of this municipality are: Noia, Pantano, Ciglio, Succhivo and, of course, Sant'Angelo.
The commune of Barano is famous for the beauty of places and of the panoramic views: here are qualities of both sea and hills resorts: quitness and wholesome air, green and blue. Last but not least the thermal fountains of Olmitello, near the Maronti, and of Nitruoli, near Buonopane, renown since from antiquity.
Through the hamlet of Testaccio and the nice promenade built in 1765 by the Viceroy of Palermo Giorgio Corafa,we arrive to the Maronti Beach, wide and wild, once used only to land or to hunt quails and nowadays one of the most attractive features of Ischia island.
Among Barano's hamlets, a particular mention has to be done for Buonopane, where are jealously kept some traditions peculiar of this village. The most renown is the "Ndrezzata", a folk dance celebrated on Easter's Monday and characterized by a strong rhythm, stressed by the noise of "mazzarielli", wooden swords which they simulate a fight with, among dancers performing the battle of sexes, with final win of fertility. Also for the patron saint festivity of San Giovanni (St.John) they perform a characteristic procession with deeply symbolic meanings.
