Isle of Capri : Imperial Villa Jovis  (page 3 of 4)
The Hall must be a very rich and magnificent place. Unfortunately, they rest only bare walls, cause of continual spoliations of precious stuff, most done in the 18th century, when the archaeological fashion diffused among the Bourbon court after the rediscovery of Pompeii Ruins: marbles, mosaics, columns, statues and all ornaments of emperor's home were pillaged and scattered around royal palaces, museums and private collections. Some remains are still visible: a precious African marble flooring now covers the floor of high altar into the main church of St. Stephen in Capri; another richer one is exposed into Capodimonte Museum (formerly Royal Palace of Borboni) in Naples.

Imperial Villa Jovis

Over emperor's balcony (on top of the Villa) upon Tiberius private rooms and overhanging Great Hall, today we find a little church dedicated to Our Lady of Aid. Present building of the church belongs to 18th century, but since first Middle Ages in that place there had been a chapel dedicated to Saints Christopher and Landino, used as hermitage. At the beginning of last century was added a statue representing the Virgin Mary with Infant Jesus. Little church is generally closed, but opens every year during the feast of Virgin Mary's nativity (occurring on 8th of September) since the Madonna has been chosen as patron saint by people living in Tiberio's district, and in that occasion they organize also a song show called "Piedigrotta Tiberiana".  [ More...]
