Isle of Capri : Belvedere of Migliera  (page 1 of 2)
MiglieraThe Migliera (or Migliara) is a spectacular lookout, on a sheer drop from the cliff to the sea in the Lighthouse area, on the south-west corner of the island. You can reach it from the centre of Anacapri by a long walk through Caposcuro street, passing near the cemetery and the Church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli (Our Lady from Costantinople), the earliest parish church in Anacapri, which was built during the Byzantine age. Then you continue on Migliera street.

According to Amedeo Maiuri, the archaeologist who led the excavations of Roman imperial palaces of Villa Jovis and Damecuta during the first half of 20th century, this lookout was already known by the Romans, who marked out the road shaded by oak trees and with a straight route at medium height of the slope of Mount Solaro, and also built a belvedere at the end of the road, on the most panoramic point.

From Miglera lookout they starts two paths: one goes down to Torre della Guardia (the Guard Tower), a medieval sentinel outpost having a wide view over all the west side of the island; the other climbs to Mount Solaro, the highest hill of Capri, following the southern side of Anacapri, that rises sheer from the sea. The first half of this path is quite simple and extraordinarily panoramic, with several natural balconies that overlook the precipice, giving an indelible impression of beauty and fascination.

The next half of the way up is instead harder, suggested only for trekking and also less striking. The path is marked by the red vernice signs of CAI (Italian Alps Club) for the mountain tracks, which indicate a medium difficulty. Nevertheless, in some places you can lose sight of them, so you must pay attention. This area is much frequented by hunters.  [ More...]
