Isle of Capri : Matermania  (page 2 of 3)
In the Matermania cove we find other masterpieces by nature: the White Grotto and the Marvellous Grotto. The two caves are one upon the other, both lighted by the same large mouth on the sea level. Below is the White Grotto, so named because it consists of two natural basins where collect sea and spring waters, causing a high concentration of minerals that gives water a whitish appearance.

On the upper side there is the Marvellous Grotto, accessible through some stairs carved out of the rock. It has plenty of stalactites and stalagmites showing different colours and brightness according to reflections of light coming through the large mouth of the cave and bouncing off the basins and the rocks from White Grotto below. Both caves are reachable only by boat from the sea.

The south side of the small bay, called "Fondo", was connected before by a path on the hill, crumbled some years ago. The wild and beautiful cove of Matermania is among preferred destinations by people riding boats for pleasure. You can fully appreciate its beauty from the lookout of Piano delle Noci (Walnuts Plan) that faces the sheer cliffs in the sea and the Campanella Headland in the background.  [ More...]
