Isle of Capri : Ruins of Damecuta  (page 3 of 3)
The tower of Damecuta, built near that viewpoint, dates to the Middle Ages and was one of a large set of guard towers built to give warning of attack by the Sarace pirates (who tormented the entire coast of southern Italy between 1400-1500 A.D.) during the Spanish Reign. Its foundation was erected from preexisting Roman buildings, some small rooms with dramatic views over the sea, which some archaeologists believe were the emperor's private quarters.

Ruins of Damecuta

From entrance to Villa Damecuta we can see part of the western side of the island and mainly the Orrico's outpost, where French soldiers landed and conquered the island from English ones, at the times of Napoleonic Wars. Some other small outlying forts belonging to same period are situated along western coast, on promontories. Even Villa Damecuta was damaged by military constructions done both by English and French soldiers. Restorations done in the Forties had tried at least to cancel those damages and show the few remains from ancient splendour.
