Isle of Capri : Charterhouse of S.Giacomo  (page 4 of 4)
The various sections of the Certosa are all connected and may be visited in sequence starting from the church at the entrance that acted as a division between the public and private areas of the monastery. A vaulted corridor connects the church to the museum and the two cloisters. It is not possible to enter either the church or the Small Cloister directly from the outside today, but via the museum during opening hours, to keep these areas in the best possible condition. Once the Certosa lost its central role in the religious life of the island, it was used for a variety of activities: as a national monument, it is today considered as an ideal setting for cultural events.

A garden lies behind the Certosa that is closed by two small lookout towers: one faces onto the Faragioni (crags in the sea), the other onto the bay of Marina Piccola. The breathtaking drop seen from these terraces gives an idea of the original position of the monastery, isolated and easily defended, behind the town and its walls and, above all, defended from the sea by a steep and rocky coastline accessed with difficulty. It is also necessary to imagine the surrounding area without any of the modern buildings, houses and hotels that today besiege the Certosa: then you will see the Certosa stood in splendid isolation, beautiful and proud, in the centre of the fertile and uninhabited valley in the centre of Capri.
