Amalfi Coast : Maiori  (page 2 of 2)
MaioriThe main church of Maiori, in the middle of what remain of the historic centre, in a higher position respect to the rest of the town, is Santa Maria a Mare (Our Lady on seashore) built in the 12th century and largely renovated between the 18th and 19th century. It is characterized (as many other churches on the Amalfi Coast) by the large dome covered by majolica tiles. In its interior there are a wooden sculpture of the Madonna with Child of the 15th century and a museum of Sacred Vestments, organized in the Sacresty.

Among the other churches in Maiori, we mention the Church and Convent of San Francesco (St.Francis) at the entrance to the town coming from Minori, built at the beginning of the 15th century and immediately forayed by the Saracens, but soon restructured thanks to the intervention of San Bernardino da Siena, who also made the miracle of springing water in the garden of the convent.

And the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Our Lady of Graces), whose first testimonies belong to 596, in a letter by the pope San Gregorio Magno. The actual church would constitute only a portion of the ancient basilica, destroyed by a flood of the river Reginna; the facade belongs to the 17th century, but inside there is the christening font of the 13th century and the frescos painted between the 14th and 16th century.

Through the valley behind the town of Maiori, called Valle di Tramonti by the name of the main town inland, which is in a northern position respect to Maiori, we get into the core of the mountain range of Monti Lattari, a completely different environment and having the typical characters of the mountain life. From the Valley of Tramonti also derives the name of the cold northerly wind (Tramontana) for centuries written above the Rosa dei Venti (Wind Rose), used as background of the compass, introduced in Europe by the sailors of the Amalfi Republic.
